NEAT KNOT
A slick and tidy bun is the best way to keep your neck cool and look polished all day long. Layer a leave-in
conditioner throughout your hair and create a deep
side part (this helps it look more like a style rather
than something you threw together). Simply secure
in a low ponytail and pin into a chignon with bobby
pins. “A version of this that I like to do is a
rope-braid chignon,” says Luke Chamberlain,
an L.A.-based hairstylist who has worked
with Selena Gomez, Emily Ratajkowski
and Nicole Richie. “Secure hair in a
low ponytail, braid it and then twist
the braid into a chignon. It’s tighter
and more graphic.”
Finish the look with a spray wax,
advises Luke. “It keeps everything
in place but isn’t as sticky as a
pomade and gives more hold
than a traditional hairspray.”

CATCH THE WAVE
This classic summer style
looks best when it’s a bit
rogue and beachy. The
key is to add grit with a
sea-salt spray or mousse.
Keep in mind that
however you set it wet,
that’s how it will dry. “I like
to apply a wave-enhancing
product, twist the hair and
then let it set, and shake it
out when it’s dry for the
ultimate beachy waves,”
says Luke. If you don’t
have time to do the twist,
simply add product and
then tuck hair behind
ears when it’s wet – this
will create a natural kink
around the face.

MAKING THE BRAID
The brilliant thing about braids is that once styled on wet or
damp hair, they actually act as a “set” for wavy tresses two
or three days later. Boxer braids – two symmetrical, tightly
wound Dutch braids separated by a super-sharp centre part
that run from the forehead to the nape of the neck – are
some of the trendiest for summer, albeit a bit tricky to tackle
solo, says Luke. “Instead, I like to recommend a loose and low
braid tucked behind the ears or a single
Dutch braid that starts at the crown. The
messier the better, and it’s easier to
achieve on yourself,” says Luke. Work a
styling cream through wet hair to make
it simple to braid. If you’re starting
with dry hair, apply lots of texture
spray throughout the lengths to make
hair easier to weave and pull out for a
thicker, more textured plait.

HALF AND HALF
Chokers and midriff tops
aren’t the only ’90s trends
resurfacing this summer.
Face-framing tendrils are
back, too – making the
half-up, half-down do cool
again. This is a perfect
no-heat style, especially
for shorter crops and “day
two” hair. Simply scoop
hair off your neck, secure
it in a loose bun or
ponytail at the crown and
leave a few wispy pieces
around the face. This sexy
and simple style keeps you
cool without looking too
severe or leaving you
feeling overexposed. Add
a moisturizing hairspray to
keep humidity away.
