Three months after his daughter made her way into the world, Ryan Reynolds has revealed the name that he and his wife Blake Lively have chosen for their little one. Speaking on the Today show, Green Lantern actor Ryan confirmed reports that the youngster is called James.

"It's Butternut Summer Squash," joked 38-year-old Ryan. "No, it's out there. It's James. Everyone knows.

Ryan confirmed that he and Blake have named their daughter James

"I told everyone who would listen before it was out there that I didn't want to be the first guy screaming it out to the media because, as we know, little girls turn into teenage girls and little teenage girls sometimes scan through the archives and go, "Why did you do that?""

Rumours that Blake and Ryan had chosen to call their daughter James began to circulate in February, when E! reported that the couple had opted for an unconventional name for their little girl.

Vancouver-born Ryan had previously denied that the couple's firstborn was called Violet after someone claiming to work at Westchester Medical Centre, where Blake gave birth, tweeted that they had been "glad to have baby Violet" in their care.

Speaking on The Late Show with David Letterman, new dad Ryan joked: "It is a very pretty name, but that's Ben Affleck's daughter's name. We'd never steal another celebrity's baby's name, so we went with Shiloh."

Ryan is clearly already a doting dad, telling David that fatherhood is "the best" and revealing that he never expected to feel so protective over his daughter.

"I used to say to [Blake], 'I would take a bullet for you. I could never love anything as much as I love you. I would say that to my wife," he told the chat show host. "And the second I looked in that baby's eyes, I knew in that exact moment that if we were ever under attack, I would use my wife as a human shield to protect that baby."

While Ryan is enamoured with baby James, however, he revealed that she has been keeping him and Blake up at night.

"Our baby, in particular, is, we think, allergic to sleep," he told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. "We think that she thinks she's protecting us from the sleep monsters. Like, "Oh I have to keep them up or the sleep monsters will get them.""
