Ryan Reynolds may be playing a superhero in his upcoming film Deadpool, but he insists it is his wife Blake Lively who deserves the title. The 38-year-old opened up about the birth of his seven-month-old daughter James in an interview with US talk show host Conan O'Brien on Tuesday.

"My wife is the real, I mean she is a mercenary," he explained. "At one point in the middle of the labour room, the doctor's cell phone went off and she said, 'Oh no. Go ahead, take a personal call. Feel free.

"She was cracking jokes in the delivery room. She may have been on drugs, but I don't ask personal questions."

The actor also joked that he was helpless during the delivery of his daughter, confiding: "I was there for the conception of the child so I thought the least I could do is be there in the delivery room. I'm not going to lie to you, I saw things. But amazing."

He added: "I was just a terrible coach. There was a lot of clapping. I went for a couple of high fives, which she did not return."

Ryan and Blake welcomed their first child together in December, and since then the Green Lantern star has spoken openly about his experiences of becoming a father, previously joking that his daughter was "allergic to sleep".

Ryan shared a sweet Instagram snap of his daughter in May

The proud dad gave the first glimpse at his baby girl after opening his Instagram account in May, with a sweet snap that showed her clutching his hand.

"Thumb wrestling isn't always fair. Curiously, my hand is the small one," Ryan wrote, leading to over 14,000 likes in an hour.

Meanwhile his wife, former Gossip Girl star Blake, also appears to be loving motherhood and said that it has changed her outlook.

"Everything is different. You see a balcony and you're like, 'Oh God, the hotel needs to demolish this balcony because my child can't go anywhere near it," she said during an appearance on Live! With Kelly and Michael. "So, everything is just like, so much more heightened. We're crying all the time for no reason."
