Katy Perry on Russell Brand divorce: "I was in bed for about two weeks"

Katy Perry’s new album Prism is out this week, and while the singer’s latest record is full of the bubblegum pop tunes we're used to, it also speaks frankly about her divorce from comedian Russell Brand.

In an interview with the UK's Sunday Times, Katy says she was devastated after she was blind-sided with divorce papers in Dec. 2011. The couple officially called it quits in Feb. 2012.

"I was in bed for about two weeks," she said. "It hurt a lot -- I got a good knock."

The heart-wrenching breakup provided inspiration for her new album, particularly for a song called "By Grace of God" in which she sings about wanting to give up on life.

"The song is very autobiographical," she said. "I was down and out, I'd lost hope, all of my confidence had been shattered."

Now in a better place, Katy’s spun her pain into a soon-to-be hit record ("Roar" has already debuted at number one, with the video garnering more than 35 million view on YouTube). And then of course, there's her new love of more than a year, John Mayer.

“I had a crush on him for a long time, and it just so happens we fit together great,” she told W magazine, explaining that “everything happens for a reason.”
