Who is Kiesza?
You may not have heard of the Canadian singer-songwriter (yet), but the 25-year-old is blowing up the charts in Britain and may soon be catapulted to international fame.
The Calgary-born songstress has enjoyed unprecedented success overseas with her infectious electro-pop single, “Hideaway,” which has nabbed the top spot on UK iTunes and the number one spot on Shazam for the past six weeks.
“Being number one is the most amazing feeling ever,” Kiesza (pronounced “Kaisaa”) told OfficialCharts.com. “I just want to say thank you to everybody who’s supported it. I never expected this at all when I created ‘Hideaway’; it’s amazing to see people come out of the woodwork and fall in love with it, so thank you!”
Dubbed as “one of the great new pop discoveries of 2014” by music site Idolator, the singer was previously a member of the Royal Canadian Navy and a trained ballerina before she decided to dedicate herself to music.
Her debut album is slated for release this fall and pays tribute to deep house while exploring "the whole ‘90s era,“ which is clearly referenced in the music video for "Hideaway.”
Directed by her brother, who was also in the Navy, the video was shot in Brooklyn in a single, amazing take that showcases Kiesza's dance background.
Most impressive of all, the up-and-comer told Rolling Stone that she struggled to shoot the video because she broke a rib right before filming and “couldn’t move for an entire month afterward.”
