The buzz around this year’s MuchMusic Video Awards is picking up, thanks to the first performers announced to be playing the annual street bash: New Zealand’s Lorde and the Las Vegas foursome Imagine Dragons.
In an official statement, Executive Producer Sheila Sullivan addressed the music station’s choices, saying they're “two of the hottest performers in the world right now, who have both made such an incredible impact on music in such a short time.”
And there’s certainly no denying their place in the International zeitgeist, given that Imagine Dragons’ album ‘Night Visions’ went triple platinum, while Lorde’s song “Royals” has already gone six times platinum, selling more than 480,000 units to date.
Lorde, 17, has been in the crosshairs of the court of public opinion lately, having called out photographers for liberal Photoshopping of concert images and commenting on the “media’s lecherous gaze.” Here’s hoping the “Tennis Court” singer revels in some good old Canadian hospitality.
The MMVAs air on MuchMusic on June 15.
