Madonna has finally opened up about her marriage to Guy Ritchie, the British film director to whom she was betrothed for seven years. Speaking to the Sun, the singer said “I did sometimes find myself in a state of conflict. There were times when I wanted to express myself as an artist in ways that I don’t think my ex-husband was comfortable with.”
She admitted, “There were times I felt incarcerated. I wasn’t really allowed to be myself.”
Madonna, 56, and Guy, 48, were married at Skibo Castle in Scotland on 22 December 2000. They confirmed their split in October 2008. The Living for Love star acknowledged that compromise is a key part of any successful relationship, and said she just needs to find the right man to accept her for who she is.
“It doesn’t mean marriage is a bad thing,” she said. “But if you’re an artist, you’ve got to find someone who accepts who you are and is comfortable with that.”
Asked if she would ever marry again, the singer simply replied, “Never say never”.
Madonna and Guy are parents to 14-year-old son Rocco, as well as the two children they adopted together, David and Mercy, both nine.
Snatch director Guy previously spoke about their marriage in an interview back in 2011. “It’s definitely not something I regret,” he told Details magazine. “I love the kids that came out of it.
“But you move on, don’t you… I stepped into a soap opera and I lived in it for quite a long period of my life. I’ll probably be more eloquent on it 10 years from now.”
Guy is now happily engaged to model Jacqui Ainsley, with who he has three children; three-year-old son Rafael, daughter Rivka, two, and a second little girl, born in June 2014, whose name has not yet been released.
