Take Five With...Elle King: What I've learned about love and heartbreak

By: Renee Gold

Perhaps no other song aptly describes singer Elle King’s unapologetic persona better than "America’s Sweetheart" — a track from her debut album, Love Stuff. The antithesis of a traditional pop star, the 25-year-old Ohio native sings confidently: “I like the chip I got on my front teeth, and I got bad tattoos that you won’t believe...What do you want from me, I’m not America’s sweetheart, but you love me anyway.”

Described as a cross between Duffy, Adele and Joan Jett, this genre-bending rising star is the daughter of former-model London King and comedian Rob Schneider, though the couple divorced soon after Elle was born. The songstress brings her heartbreak-laced tracks to Canada for a June 3 show at the Drake Hotel in Toronto. Since she's no stranger to the trials and tribulations of love (a running theme on her first album), we asked the outspoken singer to share five things she's learned when it comes to matters of the heart.

I was 24 when I truly fell in love for the first time. I had never felt that and will probably never feel that way again. That's why you only get one first love. The positive aspect of young love is that it means having blind faith in another human being. The drawback is how much it can hurt you.

I have yet to find any healthy way to get over someone. The only thing I have been trying to do is not let myself get too close to people too quickly. I can be tough at times, but it's just out of self-protection. There are so many things I regret about how I've handled things. I'm still learning. We're always still learning.

Honestly, songwriting is a huge help for me when I'm dealing with any hardships in my life. However, love, family, friendships, self-acceptance all tend to be the most prominent themes in my music. That's likely because those are the things that I get so wrapped up in and spend most of my time thinking about!

Like most people who are born under the Cancer zodiac sign, I am unbelievably sensitive and emotional, but there are many of the sign's common traits that I don't identify with. I'd be lying if I said I didn't Google [whether I was compatible with someone else's sign] every time, but people believe what they want to believe. I fall in love fast, but I fall out of love even faster!

My mom always told me and continues to tell me to take my time, live with kindness and love. One day I'll listen to her.
