Canadian singer-songwriter Alessia Cara is on top of the music world. After releasing her debut single "Here" in April, the soulful song rapidly climbed the charts and became one of summer’s biggest hits. Now, the 19-year-old Brampton-native is ready to showcase more of her talent on her recently released first album, Know-It-All.
On the eve of her album’s release, a cool and confident Alessia sat down with Hello! to discuss her successful year, musical intuition and how she is using her music to stand up for important topics, like body image and self-confidence. “It’s such an issue that we go through all the time. I definitely go through it,” she admits. “Every girl goes through it.” Her emotional song "Scars to Your Beautiful" was born after Alessia started questioning why finding self-confidence can at times be such a struggle. “I was thinking about it and all these extremes that we go through nowadays just to feel like we can walk out and feel confident. It’s kind of sad and I wanted to talk about it.”
Following our interview, Alessia jetted off to New York to tape an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers. It was the latest in a long list of high-profile gigs for the singer, including her late-night debut on The Tonight Show in July, a spirited performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and an onstage duet with Taylor Swift during her 1989 tour. In addition to her A-list endorsements (Drake is a fan), Alessia’s haunting vocals, laid-back style and down-to-earth personality have helped the talented musician prove that she has not only arrived, but she is “Here” to stay.
