In 2007, the then-21-year-old singer beat thousands of wannabes to secure a place in the top 22 finalists on season 5 of Canadian Idol. After 13 weeks of performances, including memorable renditions of songs like "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia and Melissa Etheridge’s "Come to My Window," Carly Rae finished the competition in third place.

The video for her breakout song "Call Me Maybe" has been viewed more than 700 million times on YouTube. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in 2012, director Ben Knechtel revealed that the video, which only took 12 hours to complete, was filmed in Langley, B.C., about an hour away from Carly Rae’s hometown of Mission.

"Call Me Maybe" wasn’t just one of 2012’s most played songs, it also was one of the most covered songs of the year. Dozens of amateur singers and celebrities like Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Katy Perry gave the pop song the lip sync treatment while Kelly Clarkson, Ben Howard and Cody Simpson performed the track live.

Carly Rae turned to Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun to help her break into the U.S. market. The partnership was a huge success, with Scooter helping Carly to take "Call Me Maybe," which sold more than nine million copies to the top of the charts in more than 37 countries.

After a long-fought battle with fellow chart-topper "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye, "Call Me Maybe" landed at the number 2 spot on Billboard’s Top 100 of 2012.

The "I Really Like You" singer has won two very special awards. In 2013, Canada's Walk of Fame named her the recipient of the Slaight Allan Award for her contribution to music and Billboard dubbed her the Rising Star in 2012.

The singer was the big winner at the 2013 Juno Awards, scooping up three of the five awards for which she was nominated. Her album Kiss won best album and best pop album and "Call Me Maybe" scored single of the year honours.

In February 2014, the singer made her Broadway debut in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. After a four-month run, Carly Rae left the role, which she later called a dream come true. Speaking with Broadway.com, the pop star revealed, “It was a bucket list goal of mine to be in a Broadway show, but I never could have imagined it would be as good as this. I made a family of friends that I'll be keeping for life. And I learned so much. It was hard work but it was also extremely gratifying.”
