Listen to this: New singles from Adele and Tegan & Sara
By Nicholas Jennings
Most pop songs deal with either love or heartbreak. This week sees two top acts singing about both sides of the romantic equation. While Adele's focuses on a breakup, Tegan & Sara are all about a hookup. Both songs perfectly capture the upsides and downsides of a spring romance.
Adele: “Send My Love
(To Your New Lover)”
Little has been heard from England’s mega-star since she
dropped her
25 album last November.
No doubt that’s because the “Hello” singer has been watching sales of her disc
climb to 19 million copies worldwide as she prepared for her latest concert
tour, which opened in Belfast at the end of February and will keep her moving
around the globe until mid-November. But Adele surprised fans this week
with an Instagram video showing her in a dazzling, floor-length Victorian
dress and an announcement of her next single, a breakup song.
Adele has revealed that the subject of the song is an ex-boyfriend. But she’s clearly over him. “I’m in the best place ever,” she said. “I have no idea where he is now.” The video for the stirring pop anthem will be unveiled at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards. In the meantime, it’s worth revisiting the stirring pop anthem in light of the new revelations.
Tegan & Sara: “Stop
Desire”
Tegan & Sara have been teasing the release of the
upcoming album
Love You to Death with
the singles “Boyfriend” and “U-Turn.” Now the Calgary sisters have released a
buoyant pop song that boasts a danceable beat and infectious chorus. Here’s a
taste of the lyrics: “In a minute, I’ll be hoping you’re outside/Another
second, you’ll be walking on my wild side/you know I’m ready for anything to
happen/Take this passion, turn it into action.” Yes, it’s about hooking up — a perfect
spring romance song.
Tegan & Sara themselves were even explicit in describing the subject matter the song in a short and snappy post on Twitter.
