Serena Ryder: “Got Your Number”
It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the Juno-winning
artist from tiny Millbrook, Ont., who’s won the hearts of Canadian fans with
her big, bluesy voice and anthemic songs. Now, the “Stompa (What I Wouldn't Do)” singer is back
with a stirring, gospel-inflected rock number that seems certain to get
listeners clapping their hands and stomping their feet all over again.
Busty and the Bass: “I Try”
Montreal’s Busty and the Bass is a nine-piece band born out
of small house parties while its members were students at McGill University.
Soon the group graduated to bigger stages and gained popularity for its
electro-funk sound, featuring a horn section and the soulful vocals of MC
Alistair Blu. Now on a cross-Canada tour, the band has released an EP featuring
their thrilling (and Macy Gray-endorsed) version of “I Try.”
How hot are Busty and the Bass? While on tour in British Columbia recently, the band’s van caught fire. No one was hurt, but the blaze did cause the highway to be temporarily closed. Undeterred, the group carried on after sharing a photo on Instagram.
