Adele is broken up about the news of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's split, so much so that she dedicated her show at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night (Sept. 20) to the former couple. "I need to address the elephant in the room," the British singer told the sold-out crowd. "Did everyone hear about Brad and Angelina? I mean, I don't like gossiping, and private lives should be private – but I feel like it's the end of an era, so I'm dedicating this show tonight to them.
"It's really really sad. I don't know them at all, but I was shocked when I woke up this morning, no word of a lie. I'm glad I spoke about that, because it was playing on my mind!"
The Hollywood golden couple announced on Tuesday that they were splitting after two years of marriage and a 12 year romance. Angelina filed for divorce on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences. She has asked for physical custody of their six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne – and requested that Brad be granted child visitation rights and joint legal custody.
"This decision was made for the health of her family," the actress' attorney Robert Offer confirmed shortly after the news broke. "She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time."
In a statement to People, Brad said: "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."
The news of their split came as a big shock – not least to Brad's good friend George Clooney, who was informed about the divorce by a CNN reporter while attending a United Nations event. "I didn't know that. Wow. I feel very sorry then," the visibly-stunned star said.
"That's a sad story and unfortunate for a family. It's an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that. It's the first I've heard of it."
