Had a hard day at work? Having relationship troubles? Depressed about the state of the world? Sometimes nothing works better than a buoyant piece of music to lift the spirits. This week, two of the best mood modifiers come from veteran new wavers Blondie and Mr. Uptown Funk Bruno Mars, both know a thing or two about dance music and getting down in order to get up.
Blondie’s new single, the first track from the band’s upcoming Pollinator album, is upbeat in more ways than one. “You’re my fun when I’m down, you pick me up again” Debbie Harry sings. The song is an infectious disco number that has echoes of Blondie’s best work in the late ’70s and ’80s, when tracks like “Heart of Glass” and “Rapture” ruled the airwaves. Check out Blondie’s psychedelic, astronaut-themed video for the song.
Debbie and Blondie will unite with Garbage this summer on the Rage and Rapture Tour.
“That’s What I Like”
Speaking of fun, Bruno rocked the GRAMMYs with his performance of the latest single from his 24K Magic album. The song is a seductive promise to a lover of all his favourite things: “gold jewelry shining so bright, strawberry champagne on ice [...] diamonds all white.” Bruno, a GRAMMY veteran, turns up the heat on the song here:
Bruno also delivered one of the best moments at GRAMMYs when he teamed up with the Time for a crazy funky tribute to Prince. Afterwards, the “Locked Out of Heaven” singer tweeted his thanks to Morris Day and the Time and called them his heroes.
