Drake made history at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday (May 21). The Canadian rapper now holds the record for most wins in one night after scoring 13 trophies during the show. Adele (tag) previously held the title after winning 12 awards in 2012. The “Hotline Bling” singer won some of the night’s biggest prizes, including the Top Artist, Top Male Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album for Views.
During the award ceremony, the 30-year-old delivered a heartwarming speech while accepting the trophy for Top Billboard 200 Album. “It’s crazy we’re all here on earth for a limited amount of time and we’ve got to show love while we’re here,” the Toronto rapper stated before giving a sweet shout out to close friends and collaborators Nicki Minaj, and Lil Wayne.
“I want to say, Nicki— I’m so glad we found our way back because I love you and I could never, ever, ever see it any other way [and] I want to say Lil Wayne, if it wasn’t for the risks you took, none of us would be here tonight,” he explained.
The loving messages for his friends didn’t stop there. After the Degrassi: The Next Generation alum gave a fiery performance in the middle of the famous Bellagio fountain, he expressed his gratitude to his friends and family after receiving the Top Artist Award.
"I've got my whole family up here," said the rapper, who was surrounded by his OVO crew and his father Dennis, who was exceptionally dressed in a bright purple tux and white fedora. "Look at my dad looking all sharp,” said the Toronto native before toasting his win with a shot of his own brand of whiskey, Virginia Black.
The celebrations didn’t stop there. Backstage, Drake posed up a storm with his vast collection of hardware and even took time to bow down to fellow Canuck Celine Dion. He later posted a very Canadiana photo on Instagram of himself with the songstress and his proud father.
