Drake goes on a random acts of kindness spree in Miami

By Sarah Walker

Drake has had a busy week spreading some goodwill and cheer around Miami. Since he arrived in the south-Florida town to shoot his new video "God's Plan," he's delighted fans and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities and grocery shoppers.

The 31-year-old began the week by surprising fans at Miami Senior High School. Not only did he donate $25,000, he also promised to get the students new uniforms, designed exclusively by his clothing label OVO. Later in the day, he surprised Destiny James, a University of Miami student, with a US$50,000 scholarship.

Taking to Instagram, Destiny explained how the gift came to be.

"I applied to scholarships last year for which I had to write an essay. I received those scholarships and thought that was the end of it. Apparently, my essay and my story made it to other departments. I was contacted this weekend about doing a video speaking about where I come from, things I've been through, and why it is so important for scholarship donors to continue to donate... Drake told me that he has read great things about me and appreciates how hard I've worked through so many trials and decided to give me $50K for my tuition."

This happened today. I applied to scholarships last year for which I had to write an essay. I received those scholarships and thought that was the end of it. Apparently, my essay and my story made it to other departments. I was contacted this weekend about doing a video speaking about where I come from, things I've been through, and why it is so important for scholarship donors to continue to donate. This was the surprise the whole time. Drake told me that he has read great things about me and appreciates how hard I've worked through so many trials and decided to give me $50K for my tuition. @champagnepapi THANK YOU SO MUCH!!' You don't understand what this means to me! I would've never imagined this happening to me. I'm just a girl from Denmark, SC that wants to MAKE IT and be somebody and for you to see my hard work means the world. Thank you so much. God I thank you. You are so great and amazing! Thank you for blessing me when I thought my hard work was going unnoticed. I'm living out my dreams. God's Plan 

By Tuesday, he had donated US$50,000 to the Lotus House homeless shelter, which supports women and children, so they can pay for a new space. “Thank you Drake for the amazing surprise,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “We are so thankful for your generosity.”

Then, on Feb. 7, the More Life rapper shocked shoppers at Sabor Tropical supermarket by paying for their groceries. The news was announced over the store's intercom, and sent fans into a frenzy.

Several people posted snaps of their encounter with the artist on Instagram, while Guille Deza told E! News, “No one knew he was coming at all, we just came to do groceries. Cameras were being set up so we were all wondering what was to happen.”

Guille added Drake was "nice" and "he took photos with everyone who asked and shook hands. He helped people find what they were looking for and encouraged all—to buy everything they want and to fill their carts."

All of the donations are rumoured to be part of the music video The 6 god is filming in the city. "God's Plan" has spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
