Oscars preparations underway for Hollywood’s biggest night

Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre is abuzz with activity as Hollywood gears up for its biggest night of the year.

A team of workers have been busily preparing the venue, which plays host to the event, by shutting down roads and erecting the first of the giant Oscars statuettes.

Elsewhere, giant billboards were installed bearing the Oscar logo and images of host Ellen DeGeneres.

And an integral part of the preparations will be the laying of the all-important red carpet that will be trod by Tinseltown’s biggest names.

Although the aesthetics of the ceremony are still a working progress, the nominees’ fates were sealed on Tuesday.

Thousands of ballot slips – both physical and in online format – were counted as esteemed members of the acting community submitted their votes before the 5pm deadline.

More than 5,000 panel members are responsible for deciding who will be going home with the prestigious accolades.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are among those tasked with delivering the verdict, along with last year’s big winners, including Daniel Day-Lewis, Anne Hathaway, Christoph Waltz and Jennifer Lawrence.

A full list of those who will hand out trophies was released on Monday. Other big stars announcing winners include Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Kevin Spacey, Samuel L Jackson, Jamie Foxx and Penelope Cruz.

Those performing on the night, meanwhile include Bette Midler. Shortly after the news of her first ever Oscars gig was out, the iconic singer took to Twitter to ask her fans for song suggestions.

She wrote: “Now that the news is out, what shall I sing at this years#Oscars?”

Her fans aren’t the only ones who are looking forward to seeing Bette’s performance. “This makes me so happy,” wrote the night’s host, Ellen, on her Twitter after retweeting Bette’s big news.
