Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto’s heartwarming Oscars speeches for ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ wins

As Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto accepted their wins for their roles in Dallas Buyers Club (Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively), the two stars thanked their families in heartfelt Oscars speeches.

Leading man Matthew mixed triumph with tears as he accepted his trophy with his typical southern charm. “To my father who I know is up there right now with a big pot of gumbo, he has a big lemon meringue pie,” the star said in tribute to his dad James, who passed away in 1992.

“He’s probably in his underwear and has a big can of Miller Lite and he’s dancing right now. To you dad, you taught me how to be a man.”

“To my mother (Mary), who’s here tonight, who taught me and my two elder brothers – demanded – that we respect ourselves. And in turn we were able to learn how to respect others. Thank you for that mama.”

The first-time Oscar winner had to fight back the tears as he thanked his wife Camila Alves and their children, sons Levi, six, and Livingston, two, and four-year-old daughter Vida.

“You are the four people in my life that I want to make the most proud of me,” he said. “Thank you.”

Matthew’s co-star Jared also honoured his family as he accepted his Best Supporting Actor trophy.

“In 1971, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high-school drop-out and a single mum, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children.”

“That girl is my mother and she’s here tonight,” he said of his mom Constance, who attended the awards, along with Jared’s brother Shannon. “And I just wanna say, I love you mum. Thank you for teaching me to dream.”
