From book to blockbuster: Oscar-winning films based on novels
Back to story BEN-HUR:
Based on Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel, ‘Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ,’ 'Ben-Hur' is one of the most critically lauded film adaptations ever made. The 1959 epic historical drama was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won an unprecedented 11 – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Charlton Heston), Best Supporting Actor (Hugh Griffith), Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Special Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Music Scoring and Best Sound Editing. As of 2012, only ‘Titanic’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ (also based on a book) have matched the film's wins.
