Prince Carl Philip of Sweden turns one year older (and another year more handsome!) on May 13, and the dashing royal, who is also the Duke of Värmland, will celebrate his 36th birthday with friends, family and his biggest fan of all - fiancée Sofia Hellqvist.
In exactly one month, Prince Carl Philip will marry his longtime love during a lavish ceremony in the Royal Palace’s chapel. It will be the Swedish monarchy's first wedding since Carl Philip’s younger sister, Princess Madeleine, said “I Do” to American businessman Christopher O’Neill in 2013.
The couple met in 2009 and enjoyed years of somewhat private courting before Carl Philip asked for Sofia’s hand in marriage this past January. Like his sisters, Priness Madeleine and Crown Princess Victoria, Carl Philip is breaking with royal tradition by marrying a commoner. Sofia, 30, grew up in Älvdalen, Sweden, before moving to New York to study at the Institute of English and Business. The former model also appeared as a contestant on the reality dating show Paradise Hotel. “Carl Philip is the most humble person I have ever met, which is what made me fall for him in the beginning. He has one of the most beautiful hearts, he is very warm,” said Sofia shortly after the couple announced their plans to marry.
News of the engagement broke the hearts of many who considered Carl Philip to be one of the world’s most eligible bachelors. The only son of Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia is an avid outdoorsman who loves skiing and sailing, and his good looks have attracted many admirers. Should Carl Philip's life story ever be made into a movie, casting directors might look to the likes of Orlando Bloom or Jamie Dornan to play the charming prince. He is one of many royal princes that has a doppelgänger living under the bright lights of Hollywood.
