This year the honour fell to new parents Carl Philip and Sofia, who delighted well-wishers by offering a glimpse at their young son, who was born on April 19. With the six-week-old cradled in her arms, Princess Sofia couldn't have looked happier as she greeted the crowds while wearing a traditional outfit in Sweden's national colours.

The new mom gazed down lovingly at Prince Alexander and waved to the crowds while standing alongside her husband Prince Carl Philip, who appeared to be in equally high spirits.

The royal couple's outing marks their public debut with their son Prince Alexander. Until now the only glimpse fans have had at the youngest member of the Swedish royal family are the official portraits released by the palace, including five family portraits shared when Alexander was just three weeks old.

The pictures were released to celebrate Carl Philip's birthday, as well as to thank fans for their well wishes.

A message from Carl Philip and Sofia on their social media accounts read: "We would in this way like to convey our sincere gratitude for all the congratulations we received in connection with our son, Prince Alexander's, birth. We genuinely appreciate your kindness and considerations."

Prince Alexander Erik Hubertus Bertil, Duke of Sodermanland, was born at 6:25pm at the Danderyd hospital in Stockholm and weighed about 7 pounds 9 ounces.
