Dutch royal family delights at Rio Olympics as their team sails to gold

King Willem-Alexander, his wife Queen Máxima and the couple's three daughters took in the ninth day of the Rio Olympics, and what a day it was for the proud royals!Watching the thrilling sailing event excitedly, the family cheered as the Netherlands' Dorian van Rijsselberghe took home the gold.

The Dutch royal family watched the action from their boat, with the king and two of his daughters proudly sporting Team Netherlands T-shirts in orange, the country's national colour.

The three girls Princesses Amalia, Alexia and Ariane made a sweet trio, smiling for photographers as they wrapped their arms around each other.

There were celebrations all around as the family were joined by Olympic champion Dorian, who finished first in the Men's RS:X event with time to spare. Máxima gave the windsurfer a huge embrace and congratulated him on his gold victory as he stepped onboard.

Sunday's event was the first time the royals have been spotted at the Rio Olympics as a family-of-five. Máxima, 45, and Willem-Alexander, 49, previously made an outing to the aquatics centre on Saturday, where they watched the Men's 4 x 100m Medley Relay Final.

The couple were in high spirits, joking around and taking photos on their smartphones. The queen, who is originally from Argentina, looked summer chic in a patterned, strapless jumpsuit.

The family are enjoying their summer holidays in South America, while the three princesses are off school and Máxima and Willem-Alexander are also taking a break from royal duties.

While the king is abroad, his official office Noordeinde Palace in The Hague has been open to members of the public. For the first time ever, tourists and locals have been allowed access into the lavish palace.
