Princess Eugenie opens up about romantic Nicaraguan proposal: ‘It was the perfect moment’

There’s nothing quite as sweet as the glow of true love – and newly engaged Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank are certainly shining in the spotlight! The royal bride- and groom-to-be announced their engagement on Monday (Jan. 22), and the Princess has shared the remarkably romantic story of the “perfect” proposal. Dressed in a stylish floral dress by Erdem and Jimmy Choo heels, Eugenie revealed that it was an "incredible moment" when her partner of seven years asked her to be his wife, and that she "cried" when he proposed.

The couple - who have been together for seven years – shared their excitement in a televised interview with BBC 1’s Matt Baker. With a show-stopping pink sapphire engagement ring on her finger, the 27-year-old opened up about their love and the romantic moment that sealed the deal.

At the beginning of the year, Jack and Eugenie were on a private getaway in Nicaragua, where they rang in 2018 amid the natural beauty of Central America. “The lake was so beautiful. The light was just a special light I had never seen. I actually said, ‘This is an incredible moment,’” the royal gushed, continuing, “And then he popped the question, which was really surprising even though we have been together seven years.”

And it’s been a wonderful seven years. The two are always spotted together at events and gatherings, flashing their megawatt smiles and gazing at each other with stars in their eyes. They first crossed paths while Eugenie was on a ski trip in Europe. “We met when I was 20, he was 24. [We] fell in love. We have the same passions and drive for life. It's so nice that we get to share this moment with everyone – and you get to meet Jack!" Matt then quizzed Jack about whether his background in hospitality will be an advantage when it comes to their big day, to which Jack jokingly replied: "I am not sure that I will get a word in edgeways!"

Eugenie further revealed that the wedding planning will commence tomorrow, and that Monday was the first day that she had worn her sapphire engagement ring. She said: "It feels very strange to be wearing it. It's very nice." When asked by Matt whether, after seven years, Eugenie was wondering why it was taking so long for Jack to pop the question, she replied: "Maybe! No, I knew!"

Down-to-earth Jack also added that he wasn’t daunted by marrying into the royal family. He told his wife-to-be: "It's very special to be part of your family now, but it's just Jack and Euge I suppose!" Proud father-of-the-bride Prince Andrewwas first to announce the engagement news, with Buckingham Palace also releasing a statement, which read: "The Duke and Duchess of York are delighted to announce the engagement of Princess Eugenie to Mr Jack Brooksbank. Her Royal Highness and Mr Jack Brooksbank became engaged in Nicaragua earlier this month. The wedding will take place in the autumn of 2018 at St George's Chapel in Windsor, with further details to be announced in due course."

Of course, the royal made sure to get her grandmother the Queen’s blessing. “Granny actually knew right at the beginning [of the engagement]. She was very happy, as was my grandfather [Prince Philip].” The couple is set to marry at Windsor Castle – the same venue as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry – this autumn, and it’s bound to be a merry day.
