Can you imagine becoming in-laws to the British Royal Family? That's exactly what's about to happen for Meghan Markle's relatives once she exchanges vows with Prince Harry on May 19. The 36-year-old's parents have been confirmed to be playing special roles on her big day, from Meghan's mom accompanying her to St George's Chapel in the same car to her dad walking her down the aisle.
And while the world knows almost everything about the royals, from the Queen's affinity for the Beach Boys to Princess Charlotte's favourite colour, not much is known about the Suits alum's family – aside from the fact that she's super close to her mom, yoga teacher Dora Ragland.
Before the darling couple meet at the altar at Windsor Castle, get to know Meghan's mom and dad, who will both be there to see their precious daughter get married.
Meghan's parents met on the set of General Hospital, the future royal revealed in a 2015 essay. "I like to think he was drawn to her sweet eyes and her Afro, plus their shared love of antiques. Whatever it was, they married and had me," she said of her mother, who was working as a temp, and her father, the show's lighting director. Their marriage was sadly short-lived and after splitting in 1988 Meghan lived mostly with her mom.
The former couple came together to release a lovely statement following their daughter's royal engagement, saying, "We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry. Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents. We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together."
Mom Doria Ragland
It's no secret that Meghan and her mom Doria are super close, and it's not just because she's her only child. From their shared love of yoga class to their mother-daughter appearance at the Invictus Games last year, they've been spotted together on more than one occasion. And let's be honest, the 61-year-old sounds like one cool mom!
For starters, she's just as giving as Meghan. The Ohio native is a social worker at a nonprofit mental health clinic in California. According to Us Weekly, her soon-to-be royal daughter helped fund her master's degree three years ago in order to get her social work license, while also working as a yoga teacher. Meghan's holistic lifestyle was definitely influenced by her leading lady, who she once described on The Tig in the sweetest way:
"Dreadlocks. Nose ring. Yoga instructor. Social worker. Free spirit. Lover of potato chips and lemon tarts. And if the DJ cues Al Green’s soul classic 'Call Me,' just forget it. She will swivel her hips into the sweetest little dance you’ve ever seen, swaying her head and snapping her fingers to the beat like she’s been dancing since the womb. And you will smile. You won’t be able to help it. You will look at her and you will feel joy. I’m talking about my mom."
Really, Meghan and Doria's relationship is every mother-daughter's dream. "We can just have so much fun together, and yet, I'll still find so much solace in her support," Meghan wrote of her mom in Glamour last year.
We all know how hard getting along with the in-laws can be, but that's not the case here – Harry absolutely loves her! "Her mum's amazing," the prince gushed during their BBC interview. It was also reported that he asked Doria for permission to marry Meghan during the Invictus Games last year. He'll get to spend more time with his mother-in-law the week before the wedding, when she'll be in town to meet the Queen and other members of the Royal Family. This is also when Harry will meet his future father-in-law for the first time!
Dad Thomas Markle
Thomas Markle is an award-winning lighting director, with two Daytime Emmy Awards under his belt, and it's thanks to Meghan's dad that she grew up on TV sets like Married... with Children. His daughter even ended up with a cameo on General Hospital, the source of her dad's accolades and the set where he met her mom!
Thomas hails from a small town in Pennsylvania that wasn't very diverse, Meghan wrote in Elle, but that didn't stop him from falling in love with her mom. Meghan wrote of their relationship, "The concept of marrying an African-American woman was not on the cards for my dad," but he wasn't "small-minded."
Her father has two other kids with his first wife Roslyn Loveless: Samantha Grant and Thomas Markle Jr., both of whom have been less-than-complimentary of their half-sister in the media and won't be attending the royal wedding.
In his retirement, Thomas has settled down in Rosarito, Mexico, on the Baja California Peninsula. Another fun fact? Her half-brother Tom Jr said that their dad won $750,000 in the lottery when Meghan was nine years old.
Showing her affection for her dad, Meghan posted a special Instagram throwback of Thomas holding her as a baby, saying: "Happy Father's Day, daddy. I'm still your buckaroo, and to this day your hugs are still the very best in the whole wide world. Thanks for my work ethic, my love of Busby Berkeley films & club sandwiches, for teaching me the importance of handwritten thank you notes, and for giving me that signature Markle nose. I love you xo -Bean," she added.
