What is the Order of the Garter? Watch our video for the lowdown on all the pomp and pageantry

Each year, royal watchers delight in seeing the Queen decked out in full regalia for the Order of the Garter ceremony, which takes place at Windsor Castle on Garter Day. This year's festivities fall on Monday (June 18), and you can expect to see plenty of knights in blue velvet robes and plumed hats. Dating back to 1348, the Order of the Garter is the most senior and historic British Order of Chivalry. The 24 knights that make up the Order have called St George's Chapel - which hosted Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding just a few weeks ago - their spiritual home since the Middle Ages. Prince Charles is also a member of the Order, as is his son Prince William, who joined in 2008 - to the delight of his then-girlfriend Kate Middleton, who watched from the sidelines in a beautiful red ensemble.
