While the new Duchess of Sussex is the centre of attention wherever she goes, it was a particular moment during her first official overseas trip to Ireland with Prince Harrythat caught people’s attention. During an outing to Dublin’s famous Croke Park, a tender minute in time between the duchess and little Walter Cullen captured hearts around the world.
Getty’s royal photographer, Chris Jackson, was on hand to capture the moment when Walter reached out to touch Meghan’s hair. Speaking to Town and Country, the photographer said: “There was a lot of anticipation for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first overseas visit as a married couple. I was certainly looking forward to the visit to Dublin and was tasked with documenting the royal couple’s visit to the iconic Croke Park Stadium in Dublin. The Sussexes arrived hand-in-hand and took the time to chat to as many of the guests as possible.”
He continued: “One of my favourite shots of the day was when Harry and Meghan posed for a group photo but as I was about to take it I noticed Meghan, well he hair specifically, had attracted the attention of 3-year-old Walter Cullen who was being held by his dad. As the young boy reached out to touch the Duchess, I loved the sweet way she interacted with the little boy, its those lovely unexpected moments that demonstrate how natural these two are on royal engagements and why they generate such a buzz wherever they visit.”
And it’s moments like those that draw comparisons between Meghan and her husband’s late mother, Princess Diana – after all, Harry did say they’d be “thick as thieves” in their engagement interview with the BBC. Her ability to connect with everyone is apparent in how she interacts with the public during royal walkabouts, her comfort around the Royal Family and even her swift relationship with the Queen of England . But it’s the duchess’s ease with children that really has royal watchers talking – and wondering when the duke and duchess will be welcoming their first child into the royal fold!
