Prince George has already celebrated a few milestones in 2018, from being a pageboy in Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal wedding on May 19 to finishing up his first year at Thomas’s Battersea Day School. But one of the most exciting milestones for Prince William and Kate's firstborn happens on July 22: turning five years old!
As the future King indulges in some birthday cake and enjoys playtime with his family members – like Princess Charlotte, 3, and their new baby sibling, Prince Louis – we’ve rounded up just a few of the royal’s most cherished things, from helicopters to his favourite pre-historic creatures.
Helicopters and planes
When it comes to airborne vehicles, helicopters really take the (birthday) cake for George! During the Cambridge family’s trip to Germany in 2017, the prince could hardly contain himself when he got to climb aboard a chopper at the Hamburg airport. Looking at the machine with wonder in his eyes, the then-four-year-old got to try on a helmet and take a seat behind the wheel.
The year before, George had the chance to climb into another plane departing from Victoria at the end of this family’s Canadian tour. When the royal crew landed, he climbed into the pilot’s seat and played with the controls, telling his mom: “I’m going to fly us to England!”
The little prince has a certain fondness for pre-historic creatures, so it’s extremely convenient that Kensington Palace is a mere hop, skip and jump away from the Natural History Museum! His mom, Duchess Kate, revealed on an official visit to the museum that he adores dinosaurs and would have loved to have come along to see the exhibit. As it is for many boys, the T-rex is his favourite because they’re “the noisiest and scariest,” Kate revealed.
To make matters even cuter, George also taps into his creative side with his love for stickers – especially ones of dinosaurs, Prince William revealed during an event at the Royal Marsden Hospital. “George likes doing his stickers. He is big into stickers,” the proud dad told a little girl, who was working on her own artistic creation.
George’s close bond with his little sister has been apparent ever since some of Charlotte’s first photos went public. Remember the one of Prince George kissing her little newborn head? As they’ve aged, it seems that their relationship has only grown stronger. And now that Charlotte is three, she’s able to go for playtime romps in the grass with her big brother! At a royal engagement, their mom gushed about how her children are becoming “very good friends.” But don’t let age fool you – the duchess also revealed that Charlotte still calls the shots … as any good big brother would allow.
When it comes to food, Prince George is living la dolce vita! Forgoing the typical kid classics like chicken nuggets, fish and chips or chocolate cake, George is a little prince with a very well-developed palette. Duchess Kate let a group of teens in on a secret while visiting a youth project in Luton, telling them he loves eating spaghetti – though he’s not the tidiest eater!
And of course, trust Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to make George’s dreams come true. While the Cambridge clan were in Canada on their royal tour, bunking at Victoria House, Justin’s wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, made sure George got to chow down on some spaghetti Bolognese.
Every child has a roster of favourite TV shows, and since growing out of Peppa Pig, Prince George has developed a fondness for Fireman Sam! During a radio interview, his dad revealed that his son take the show very seriously and expects his parents to love it just as much as he does!
In 2017, it was reported that the five-year-old would even be making an appearance on the show’s 30th anniversary episode in a one-off special titled The Prince of Pontypandy.
