After a whirlwind few months packed with royal engagements, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are tapping out for some well-deserved rest and relaxation in the Cotswolds. Kicking off a low-key August with her 37 th birthday and a close friend’s wedding on Saturday, Prince Harry and Meghan will then have plenty of time to spend at their country home, on which Us Weekly reported that they signed a two-year lease. A short 90-minute drive from London, their little piece of paradise is located in the rolling hills of south central England.
The Cotswolds is a rural area covering six different counties and offering the perfect escape from the busy lives of Royal Family members. “It’s very clear they want to be private and left alone,” one local told royal expert Katie Nicholl for Vanity Fair. “The property is in the middle of woodland and you wouldn’t know it was there. It is very remote which is why they like it. It’s like a fortress. There’s a huge security presence, you can’t get close.”
Despite being well out of reach, their haven is still heavily guarded to ensure absolute privacy – something the couple, like any newlyweds, is sure to be craving after so many months in the spotlight. Harry has done a good job of ensuring that the lovebirds get space from public life – especially when it comes to his wife. “He worries there is too much hysteria around Meghan and he wants to row back a bit,” a source revealed.
The home they’re leasing, known as Westfield Large, is one of many residential properties that are part of the Great Tew Estate, which spans a whopping 4,000 acres according to Us Weekly. While the individual properties range in size, their rented space is likely larger than their modest two-bedroom London abode, Nottingham Cottage, and they can count the Beckhams among their famous neighbours. Not only that, but Soho House’s Soho Farmhouse, where Meghan celebrated her bachelorette party, is on the property too!
“Meghan loves the Cotswolds and fell in love with the estate the first time she went,” a source told the magazine. And her husband is keen to oblige! He’s been spotted less and less around the palace, according to Katie, who heard from a friend of the couple that "Meghan likes him to keep his diary clear at the weekends so they can be together in the countryside." Finally, some time to just be newlyweds!
