The Duchess of Cambridge was dressed to impress less than one month after welcoming her third child, Prince Louis – and with the eyes of the world upon her, no less! The proud mom stepped out to help her little pageboy Prince George and bridesmaid Princess Charlotte undertake their roles at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal wedding on May 19. This was the fastest she’d ever made an official appearance following the birth of a child, but this isn’t the only way that Kate’s current maternity leave is different – it’s also her longest!
When five-year-old George was born, Kate spent six weeks out of the public eye. A few years later after, she welcomed Charlotte, now three, the newly minted mother of two enjoyed two months away from the spotlight. However, Prince Louis’ April 23 arrival meant that the duchess had less than a month to ready herself for one of the biggest royal events in recent years: her close brother-in-law Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle. Clad in the palest yellow Alexander McQueen, the royal mom looked gorgeous as she walked up the steps at St George’s Chapel alongside fellow mothers of the couple’s adorable pageboys and bridesmaids.
With that appearance under her belt, the Duchess of Cambridge was then free to enjoy her maternity leave and learn the ropes of being a mother of three. She officially started her time off in March, preparing for Prince Louis’ arrival and revealing that she’d be prioritizing raising her young children. Royal fans have had the pleasure of seeing the 36-year-old a few additional times this summer, at Trooping the Colour in June and Prince Louis’ christening in July as well as a surprise appearance at a charity polo match where the Zara-clad hands-on mom was all smiles chasing her little ones and pulling toys out of her handbag.
With their official summer holiday underway, the family of five jetted off to Mustique for some quality time with the Middletons. Prince William and Kate have been vocal about their desire to give their children as normal an upbringing as possible and the Caribbean paradise is situated in a no-fly zone, allowing high-profile guests to enjoy complete privacy. Following their fun in the sun, the Cambridges headed to their country home Anmer Hall, for a dose of the simple life. In the past, Kate has said that they even raise chickens in the country!
This time off is surely a cherished period for Duchess Kate, who has spoken about how important it is to spend time doing simple things with her kids. “Spending quality time together is such an important aspect of family life and for me, as a mother, it is simple family moments like playing outside together that I cherish,” she said in May in an open letter supporting Children’s Hospice Week. Over the years she has revealed some of these simple activities with her children, like making pizza dough. With nothing on the books until the fall, the doting mom is sure to have plenty more special moments to come on this maternity leave!
