Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been enjoying a much-needed escape from the limelight this summer, and after delighting the public with a smooch at the Sentebale Polo Cup in July the pair jetted to the historic Castle of Mey for a vacation with Prince Charles and Camilla. This trip marked the couple’s first visit to the Scottish landmark, nestled amid rolling green hills in the picturesque town of Caithness. The spot steeped in royal history, and beloved by the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, provided the perfect backdrop for some welcome family time!
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have enjoyed a number of relaxing holidays this summer, including weekends in the Cotswolds at their leased country home and a luxe long weekend in Lake Como chilling out by the water with George and Amal Clooney. Family is important to both Harry and Meghan, and it’s become clear that the duchess has really hit it off with his father and step-mother . “Charles and Camilla care deeply for Harry and Meghan, and with all that has been going on with Meghan’s family, they wanted to get them out of the city and to the coast of Scotland,” a source revealed to Us Weekly.
The jaw-dropping castle was built in the late 1500s and was passed around through Scottish royal family members before the estate landed in the hands of the Queen Mother in 1952, according to the castle’s official website. She redecorated the castle to become her holiday home and frequented the elegant space until Oct. 2001, five months before her death. Now, the site is open to tourists most days of the year, apart from the end of July and early Aug., when the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay (Charles and Camilla!) introduced the striking spot to Meghan and Harry.
Amid the personal drama that has reportedly seen Meghan leaning on sister-in-law Kate and other Royal Family members, the getaway promised a slower, more remote few days for the former actress – a breath of fresh air following a frenzied few months in the public eye. “It’s beautiful at the castle, with amazing views of Orkney islands,” the source revealed. “It was five days of time outdoors, long walks, good food and quality family time.” It’s believed that Harry and Meghan returned to their home in the Cotswolds to wrap up their lovely summer vacation before returning to their royal duties, including a trip to see a gala presentation of Hamilton on Aug. 29 and their first big royal tour to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the Kingdom of Tonga !
