Meghan Markle's TV dad said the sweetest thing to her before the royal wedding

Before Meghan Markle was the Duchess of Sussex, she was Rachel Zane on the hit paralegal show Suits. And before she walked down the aisle at St George’s Chapel, she said “I do” to her fictional husband, played by close friend and co-star Patrick J. Adams, on the small screen. Her on-screen dad, played by Wendell Pierce, was known for giving some of the best fatherly advice around, but when it came to her off-screen relationship, he really hit it out of the park on set with a sweet pre-wedding heart-to-heart.

Like any father of the bride, Wendell looks back on the moment they shared with great fondness. “We had a moment I cherish. I was sitting with Meghan in her wedding dress, as we waited for a set-up. We were alone. I said to her, ‘Your life is going to change,’” the Selma actor revealed in an interview with The Telegraph. “’It’s going to be amazing but I want you to know that I’m your friend, and no matter where you are or what’s going – if the fishbowl that you’re in ever starts getting to you – you can call me.’”

Wendell, 54, also opened up about a particular controversy with the show. When he was originally cast as Meghan’s father, some viewers on Twitter were outraged without realizing that the 37-year-old is mixed race. “The ignorance that is racism is a given. Like gravity, it’s there, it exists,” he shared. “You should always be vigilant for it and prepared for it.”

Perhaps the wedding episode, her last before bidding adieu to her Hollywood life, was good practice for her walk down the aisle in Windsor on May 19. But nothing can really prepare anyone for the shift from celebrity to royalty – and Meghan has admitted that she misses her days on screen. During a walkabout in Dublin this summer with Prince Harry, fan Fiona Moore remembered her revealing conversation with Meghan. “I’m a fan of Suits and I said to her that I miss it and she said, ‘so do I,’” the royal watcher recalled. “She seemed very relaxed and was joking and laughing.” The brunette beauty also said that she misses her former home base of Toronto , adding: “It’s a great place!”
