It was an emotional day for the Cambridges and the Sussexes on Wednesday (Sept. 12) as both Prince William and Prince Harry bid farewell to their longtime private secretaries with their wives by their sides, as reported by HELLO!. Duchess Kate, who has been on maternity leave since the end of March, is easing back into royal duty with private engagements like saying goodbye to Miguel Head after a decade in the couple's employ. And Ed Lane Fox has surely played a huge role in Meghan Markle's adjustment to royal life in addition to being the duke's right-hand man for five years.
While the Court Circular says that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge received Miguel yesterday, no photos were taken as this goodbye was said in private. When the palace announced his resignation in March, after which he married, a spokesperson for Prince William shared his praise and best wishes.
"His Royal Highness feels incredibly lucky to have benefited from Miguel's advice and support over the last decade. He has been an outstanding press secretary and private secretary, and has been central to the decisions that have guided the establishment of the Duke's office. He has also been a valued adviser during an important period in His Royal Highness's life. He wishes Miguel all the very best for the future."
Prince Harry had equally glowing things to say about Ed, with whom the Court Circular says the couple met at Kensington Palace yesterday. "His Royal Highness is hugely grateful to Ed for his hard work during a period that has seen the launch and growth of the Invictus Games, countless tours around the world, and the detailed planning for next month's wedding," the spokesperson said in April on announcing his departure, reportedly to spend more time with his family.
"Ed has led the creation of Prince Harry's private office and the development of His Royal Highness's work across a range of issues since leaving the Armed Forces. He has worked tirelessly, providing valued advice to Prince Harry and leadership of a growing team."
Since the role of private secretary is the most senior or each couple's team, they've chosen Miguel and Ed's replacements quite carefully. Civil servant Simon Case has taken the role for Prince William and Kate, managing their household and the duke's diary. The Queen's assistant private secretary, Samantha Cohen, was selected to help Prince Harry in the interim but will now be taking on the role full-time and heading Down Under with the couple for their tour in mid-October.
