The Sussexes will follow in the footsteps of past royals at these iconic tour sites

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are settling into married life with ease! After returning from their relaxing summer, which included vacations in the Cotswolds, Italy and other European destinations, the two are gearing up for their first overseas tour. Their trip will see them stop in various iconic locations in four Commonwealth countries – Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the Kingdom of Tonga – but these sites aren’t new hotspots for the Royal Family!
In anticipation of their tour, which starts on Oct. 16, we’re reminiscing on some past excursions taken by royals like Princess Diana, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

AUSTRALIA
Taronga Zoo
Any fan of the British royals will remember the adorable moment that Prince George met his furry Australia friend at the Taronga Zoo, a bilby named George! And doting parents Prince William and Kate seemed to enjoy it just as much as he did! Meghan and Harry are set to make a stop at this animal haven, too, where they’ll meet two koalas and their babies as well as help open the Taronga Institute of Science. We can’t wait to see those adorable photos!

Sydney Opera House
For anyone visiting Australia – royal or not – the Sydney Opera House is a must-see! The big, beautiful white building with its iconic jutting arches is impossible to miss and, of course, makes for a picturesque backdrop. In 1983, Princess Diana and Prince Charles visited, making for some of the most memorable photos of the duo. Prince William and Kate, and Prince Charles and Camilla also visited the tourist destination during their respective tours in 2014 and 2012. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be on site to watch the Bangarra Dance Company rehearse and will also be doing a public walkabout to greet their fans from Down Under!

Government House, Victoria
While in Melbourne, the Sussexes will pay a visit to the Government House, the home of Linda Dessau, Governor of Victoria. There, the couple will attend a reception, where they’ll meet Queen’s Young Leader Hunt Johnson, who founded The Man Cave, a mental health initiative. They’ll also be participating in various sports activities with ambassadors from the This Girl Can campaign.
The Government House is an obvious stop for any royal visiting the warm country. Princess Diana and Prince William have both visited. The grounds even feature a beautiful tree in memory of William’s late mom – a likely stopping point for Prince Harry and his wife.

South Bondi Beach
Meghan and Harry love a sandy beach just like the rest of us, so it’s no surprise they’ll be heading to Bondi Beach! The two will meet with a local surfing community group, OneWave, which helps raise awareness for mental health. (Also on the itinerary? Beach yoga!) Back in 1988, Diana made a trip to the beach to chat with some local lifeguards.

Admiralty House
The duke and duchess are set to receive a warm welcome to the House by General Peter Cosgrove and his wife, Lady Cosgrove. Meghan and Harry will meet with representatives from each of the 18 Invictus Games countries – an exciting moment, especially for Harry who founded the sports competition. Prince William, Duchess Kate and Prince George, as well as Camilla and Prince Charles, have also visited the abode during their separate trips.

Government House, Wellington
Royal watchers will never forget Prince George’s first official outing, a playdate with ten Kiwi babies when he was just eight-and-a-half months old and on tour Down Under with his parents, Prince William and Kate! It took place at Government House, where other royals like Camilla, Prince Charles and Diana have been welcomed to the country’s capital. The duke and duchess will enjoy the same welcome at the home of Governor-General of New Zealand Dame Patsy Reddy. Meghan and Harry will attend a hongi with Maori elders before watching a haka performed by the New Zealand Defence Force. Royal watchers can expect to see some heartwarming traditional Maori greetings!

Pukeahu National War Memorial Park
On a more somber note, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will participate in a meaningful wreath laying ceremony at the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park. The couple will pay their respects at the Tomb of the Unkown Warrior before visiting the newly unveiled UK War Memorial. In 2015, Prince Charles and his wife made the same trip, and just like they did Meghan and Harry will participate in a walkabout to greet fans.

Viaduct Harbour
This will likely be the first time royal watchers have seen Prince Harry and Meghan on a boat! Just like the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the newlyweds will take a ride on a motorboat at the harbour, which has become a hub of buzzing bars, award-winning restaurants and amazing nightlife.

Auckland War Memorial Museum
Later that day, Meghan and Harry will enjoy a reception hosted by the Prime Minister at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. They’ll watch some beautiful cultural performances by members of the Pasifika community and interact with young people who are making contributions to their communities. The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles also visited back in 2012 on the last leg of the Diamond Jubilee tour.
