7 ways Princess Eugenie and Jack's wedding broke with royal tradition

EVENING WEDDING PORTRAITS
Princess Eugenie and Jack also did away with tradition by releasing a stunning evening wedding portrait by their chosen photographer, Alex Bramall. This is something that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, did not do. Instead, royal fans simply got a glimpse of the couples leaving for their reception in their sleek automobiles.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank tied the knot in a spectacular royal wedding at St George’s Chapel in Windsor on Oct. 12, and while they followed many special traditions – from her Welsh gold wedding band and deep curtsy to the Queen to their carriage ride through Windsor – the couple also made their big day their own by bucking a few royal trends. NO VEIL
Princess Eugenie had a very inspiring reason for not wearing her veil – she wanted her scoliosis scar to be front and centre when she said “I do.” She had her stunning Peter Pilotto dress cut low in the back for the very same reason. When the bride was 12, she underwent surgery to correct her curved spine, and even invited the doctor who performed her life-changing surgery to attend her royal wedding. Royal brides have always worn veils, from the Queen and Princess Diana to Duchesses Kate and Meghan, with the exception of those marrying for the second time (Princess Anne and the Duchess of Cornwall). Lucky for us, it maximized the time we got ogling the Queen's spectacular Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara!

BEATRICE’S ROYAL ROLE
In addition to being her sister, Princess Beatrice is Eugenie’s closest friend and confident – and it worked out in their favour that the two are also on equal ground as royals. According to the Express, this is why the 28-year-old was able to have her sister play such an important role, as there was no concern of her upstaging the bride. At Pippa Middleton’s wedding, Kate could not do for her sister what Pippa did on the duchess’s big day because she might have upstaged the bride.

Cake designer Sophie Cabot helmed a gorgeous, autumnal five-tier creation for the couple, who opted to alternate layers of red velvet and chocolate sponge – a break from the tradition of having fruitcake at a royal wedding. The design featured perfectly realistic sugar leaves in fall colours as well as berries and flowers and was served in unique squares each decorated with icing. Eugenie’s cousins Prince William and Kate went with royal custom, serving an eight-tiered fruitcake, while Prince Harry and Meghan also chose to buck the trend and enjoy a seasonal lemon and elderflower confection that was spread among various cakes instead of one multi-level dessert.

CASAMIGOS COCKTAILS
As the European Brand Manager for Casamigos Tequila, it’s no surprise that Jack Brooksbank was “in charge of choosing drinks,” confirming that rather than the champagne served by Prince Harry and Meghan the couple would have a selection of bespoke Casamigos cocktails created for the weekend of festivities. The famed tequila brand was started by George Clooney and Rande Gerber, who sold the company for $1 billion in 2017.

WHERE IT AIRED
Unlike the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Jack and Eugenie’s nuptials weren’t broadcast on the BBC. Rather, the event aired on ITV in London, TLC in the United States and streamed on YouTube and Facebook for the rest of the world. The Duke of York started his own YouTube page for the occasion, and the Royal Family’s channel also hosted the stream.

HER SECOND WEDDING DRESS
Princess Eugenie switched up a post-wedding tradition by opting for a stunning blush-hued gown by Zac Posen. Royal brides in the past, like Duchesses Kate and Meghan, have donned white gowns for their own evening receptions. While they have all stunned in their respective outfits – from Meghan's Stella McCartney haltered ensemble to Kate's Sarah Burton perfection – Eugenie's ethereal choice was a nice breath of fresh air!
