The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have millions of admirers around the world. But there’s one special fan that Prince Harry had the chance to reunite with while on the first walkabout of his tour with pregnant Duchess Meghan in Sydney on Tuesday (Oct. 16). The royal made a beeline for his nonagenarian friend, who told his wife that she’s “just what Harry needs” before Meghan said that hopefully on their next encounter the couple will have their “little one” with them.
In their true charismatic style, the duke and duchess spent time greeting well-wishers outside the Sydney Opera House as they kicked off their 16-day royal tour. And leave it to the 34-year-old’s favourite Aussie, 98-year-old Daphne Dunne, to catch the prince’s eye. The two previously met during his 2015 and 2017 trips Down Under, and this time Meghan got to say “hello,” too.
The Royal Family is all about tradition and meeting up with Daphne is a particularly fun one that they enjoy with every visit to the gorgeous country. The Duke of Sussex gathered the woman up into a big hug before she congratulated him on the “good news,” referring to their exciting pregnancy announcement from the previous day. Of course, Harry was thrilled to introduce her to Meghan, too. Kneeling down beside Daphne, the former actress held her hands as Daphne gushed over meeting her and congratulated her on the baby news. “Thank you! What an exciting time,” the Suits alum told the woman. “Yes, I’ve been so happy.”
The elderly woman, dressed in an all-black outfit and a chic pair of metallic sneakers, shared a sentiment that much of the world did when Harry and Meghan’s engagement was announced. Meghan is “just what Harry needs,” she declared. The prince showed off his big heart and complimented the Australian woman on her shoes, playfully saying they were “very cool.” Footwear is a very important decision when meeting the newly minted Duke and Duchess of Sussex, after all.
And given Meghan’s penchant for effortless yet sleek hairstyles, it’s no surprise that Daphne decided to debut a perfectly pink ’do, which Harry pointed out to her, noticing the change from last year. Chatting with Daphne, Meghan said: “I’m so happy to finally meet you. I’ve heard so much about you – all good things.” Harry kissed the woman on her cheek and they said their goodbyes, with Meghan promising Daphne that “hopefully the next time we see you we’ll have our little one with us.”
Prince Harry and Meghan certainly started their royal tour off with a bang, with the incredible baby news released hours before they headed out on their first engagement in Australia. On Oct. 15, Kensington Palace released the official statement, which read:"Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019. Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public."
