We answer your top 10 burning questions about baby Sussex

WHERE WILL THE BABY BE IN THE LINE OF SUCCESSION?
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be welcoming a baby who falls seventh in line to the throne. At the moment, their bundle of joy is behind his or her grandfather Prince Charles, uncle Prince William, cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis and, of course, dad Prince Harry. This baby will push Prince Andrew and his daughters, princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, to 8th, 9th and 10th in line, respectively. But in the same way that Charlotte’s birthright went unchanged at the arrival of her baby brother, Louis, the Sussex baby’s position won’t diminish based on gender, thanks to an agreement between leaders of the Commonwealth who endorsed the unprecedented Succession of the Crown Act, which declares that a baby boy no longer takes precedence over a girl. The only way Baby Sussex will lose his or her place is if there’s another Baby Cambridge!

HOW WAS THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT DIFFERENT FROM WILLIAM AND KATE’S?
Meghan and Harry’s baby announcement comes at around the 12-week, or three-month, mark – a time when most women are thought to be through the most uncertain stage of pregnancy. It’s when most pregnancy announcements are made. Kate’s first-baby announcement, however, was made a few weeks earlier: the duchess was admitted at King Edward VII Hospital in London for hyperemesis gravidarum, a type of severe morning sickness, and the palace wanted to get ahead of the rumours that might have ensued. Luckily, Meghan hasn’t suffered from any health complications and so was able to announce her happy news at a time that was comfortable for her and her husband.

WAS THIS THE QUICKEST PREGNANCY ANNOUNCEMENT AFTER MARRIAGE?
With their royal wedding feeling like it happened only yesterday, Harry and Meghan’s baby news seems like a fast-paced turn of events. Coming less than five months after their nuptials, this announcement is one of the quickest in recent royal history. William and Kate waited almost two years to start a family, and Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip never formally announced her first pregnancy before she gave birth to Prince Charles. But Harry’s parents
have the newlyweds beat! Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, announced their baby news just three-and-a-half months after their wedding in July 1981. Prince
William was born on June 21, 1982, one month before their first wedding anniversary.

WILL THE BABY BE A DUAL CITIZEN?
Since the process of becoming a British citizen can take years, it’s unlikely Meghan will renounce her American citizenship (if she even chooses to do so) by the time she welcomes baby. In that case, her child will automatically acquire American citizenship at birth, though they’ll need to provide proof of the birth to an American consulate. While
technically the U.S. doesn’t embrace dual citizenship, it no longer objects to it. So the option remains open if the Royal Family would like it so.

WHAT WILL THE BABY’S TITLE BE?
Instead of being dubbed Prince or Princess, Harry and Meghan’s child might assume the title of Lord or Lady or, like the children of Princess Anne (Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips), have no title at all. The reason is that he or she will be too far down the line of succession. The limited choice of title goes back to 1917 when King George V ruled that “only the eldest living son of the eldest living son of the Prince of Wales” would receive the title of Prince, hence William’s son’s title, Prince George. However, the Queen has overruled that verdict before, allowing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s two younger children (as well as her granddaughters, Beatrice and Eugenie) to have royal titles and may well do the same for Harry and Meghan’s child.

IS MEGHAN THE OLDEST FIRST-TIME MOTHER IN THE ROYAL FAMILY?
Much was made of Meghan becoming a bride at the age of 36. Now set to give birth at 37 (her birthday is in August), Meghan is considerably older than most British royal moms in recent memory. Diana was 20 when she welcomed Prince William, Queen Elizabeth was 22 when she gave birth to Prince Charles and Kate was 31 when she had little George. But surprisingly, Meghan is not the oldest first-time mother in the Royal Family. Two years after suffering an ectopic pregnancy, Prince Edward’s wife, Sophie the Countess of Wessex, prematurely gave birth to Lady Louise Windsor (pictured) in 2003 at the age of 38. Four years later in 2007, at the age of 42, Sophie welcomed a son, James, Viscount Severn.

WHERE WILL BABY SUSSEX BE RAISED?
Despite having parents that are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the new baby will most likely not grow up in the rural county. The tiny royal will be raised at Kensington Palace, where Harry and Meghan are preparing to move into a 21-room apartment that was recently renovated. The grounds are home to Princess Eugenie and her new husband, Jack Brooksbank, and to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children, ensuring that the new baby will be surrounded by loving family members.

WHAT MATERNITY DESIGNERS WILL MEGHAN GO FOR?
Since moving to London to be with her sweetheart, Meghan has stunned onlookers with her fashion choices. With a wardrobe that includes everything from high-end Givenchy to the inexpensive brand Wilfred by Aritzia, the duchess will no doubt be a maternity style maven. But should she need any advice, her sister-in-law, Kate, will be available to share her style expertise and recommend a few of her favourite labels. Throughout her three pregnancies, Kate wore a multitude of dresses and coats that complemented her growing bump while never undermining her personal style. Her closet included fabulous looks from brands like Catherine Walker, Seraphine and Jenny Packham (the designer worn each time the duchess has emerged after giving birth). One of Meghan’s go-to labels, Erdem, was also called upon to dress Kate’s royal belly and did so beautifully, a fact that must be very reassuring to her new sister-in-law! WHAT BABY NAMES ARE ALREADY BEING CONSIDERED?
Unsurprisingly, bookies and betting sites have started laying
odds on what name will be given to the new royal. Among the top choices for a boy are Albert, after Queen Victoria’s husband; Arthur, a middle name for both William and Prince Louis; and Philip, after Harry’s grandfather. For a girl, the names Victoria and Diana are both placed high as they contain significant legacies. Alice is a name that has been cited by bookies as a favourite for years because of its royal pedigree.

WHO WILL THE GODPARENTS BE?
With most royal babies having about six godparents (George has seven, Charlotte has five and Louis has six), Baby Sussex can count on having numerous people at the ready. Royals don’t usually choose siblings to be godparents – neither Harry nor Pippa Middleton were asked to play the role for their niece and nephews. Instead, friends are bestowed the honour. Meghan’s friend and sometime-stylist Jessica Mulroney (above, with husband Ben) will most likely be considered, as will Harry’s pal Thomas van Straubenzee, already one of Charlotte’s godfathers and a close acquaintance of the family. But with so many celebrity friends (think Serena Williams and George Clooney), it’s possible Baby Sussex will have a star-studded christening!
