Getting married is one of life’s biggest milestones, and this was especially true for the Royal Family’s newly minted Duke and Duchess of Sussex , who said “I do” in front of the world. Sadly, Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, was unable to walk his daughter down the aisle, but her father-in-law, Prince Charles, quickly stepped in. Prince Harry recently opened up about asking his dad to take on the role and how the future king wasted no time in giving his excited answer.
The duke shared the experience in a new BBC documentary about his father, Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70. “I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming, and he immediately said ‘yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you.’ For him, that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he’s our father so of course he’s going to be there for us.”
While their May 19 nuptials at St. George’s Chapel were rife with beautiful moments – from Prince Harry’s sweet “wow” when he caught sight of his bride for the first time to Prince George consoling an upset bridesmaid – her walk down the aisle really took the cake. As Charles led the duchess to her future husband, the 34-year-old can be seen thanking his dad for doing the honour. “I’ve been brought up well, you’ve got to say thank you,” Harry explained of the moment. “Just because he’s my father, that doesn’t mean I can just sort of go, ‘OK, that’s all, I’ll take it from here.’ Err, no! That is what I wanted to say but I was very grateful for him to be able to do that.”
The Duchess of Cornwall , along with everyone else in the chapel during the emotional ceremony, was equally touched. And just like any proud stepmom would do, she watched the wedding back on television to relive all the heartfelt moments. “I think that was very touching, sitting where I was, you couldn’t hear what he said. But afterwards, watching it on the television, I think … It was a lovely gesture,” Camilla gushed.
