Most best friends love to share clothes, but not everyone is lucky enough to have pieces designed specifically for them! After Duchess Meghan delighted fans by wearing a blazer from bestie Serena Williams’s clothing line in Australia, the tennis star has started crafting custom looks for the royal – and also revealed just how sweet the 37-year-old’s reaction was when Serena thanked her for stepping out in the checked blazer.
The tennis champ and royal mom-to-be have been friends for years, and despite the ocean between them their relationships is clearly stronger than ever. So strong, in fact, that the mother of one has taken to shipping her own designs right to Meghan’s door. “We were all just coming out of a photoshoot for the brand when we heard that Meghan wore our line,” Serena told Marie Claire. “We had sent stuff to her a while ago, so we were excited to see it. I’ve known her for years, and it’s cool to see your friend help you out without even trying.”
It was completely unexpected for Serena, who launched her size-inclusive clothing brand in May, to see her BFF wearing the ‘Boss’ blazer for a royal engagement in Dubbo. Meghan paired it with a white Maison Kitsune button-up shirt, a pair of black Outlander jeans and cool J.Crew booties for the perfect casual look. With her hair styled in a chic low ponytail, this certainly made for one of Meghan’s trendiest outfits while on royal tour Down Under.
All eyes were on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that day, having just announced their pregnancy a few days prior. “She just wanted to look good and wear a blazer. Then next thing you know, it’s our blazer,” Serena gushed “I was like, ‘Meghan, thanks!’ and she was like, ‘Why are you thanking me? We’re friends!’”
Of course, the “Meghan effect” had its way with the jacket and it flew off the shelves almost instantly. “Since that blazer sold out, now we just have special pieces that are specifically made for Meghan and we send her those,” the 37-year-old. “It’s been fun creating them.”
Meghan and Serena have been friends for around eight years, having first met in 2010 at a Super Bowl party. They hit is off right away, reportedly keeping in touch and reconnecting again in 2014 to play flag football at DirectTV’s Celebrity Beach Bowl. Fast forward to 2018, when Serena and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, made a loved-up appearance at Prince Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding at Windsor Castle.
