“New year, new you” has certainly been the case for Duchess Meghan, who’s entered 2019 with a completely different life than the one she had before meeting and marrying Prince Harry. Set to become a first-time mother this spring while rounding out her first full year as the Duchess of Sussex, we’re willing to bet she has a few resolutions … and these may include the fateful one she made before meeting her future husband in 2016!
To mark the New Year, the then-34-year-old took to her now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig, to share some intentions with her millions of followers. But before diving into the resolution that would ultimately change her life forever, the Suits alum opened up about some promises she didn’t quite keep. “Run a marathon. Stop biting my nails. Stop swearing. Re-learn French. These make my New Year’s resolution list nearly (AKA actually every) single year,” she wrote.
Though the former actress is royalty now, she definitely maintains a relatable charm – especially when it comes to her past attempts at breaking the habits of swearing and nail biting! While many of us are guilty of these same vices, Meghan’s advice for herself (and her readers!) was a source of inspiration: “This year I resolve to not have a resolution. If I can’t run a marathon, that’s okay … My nails will be fine, and if I toss out a four-letter word once in a blue moon, well frankly I think it adds character.”
But the resolution the mom-to-be will likely want to keep around is actually based on words of wisdom from her Suits co-star, Gina Torres. Midway through telling her friend how she’d be spending her break from work, the actress had something to say. “She stopped me. ‘Meg, I will just say one thing. Make sure you leave room for magic.’ And that is my point. My New Year’s resolution is to leave room for magic,” she wrote.
And that’s definitely a resolution she took to heart! Later that year, Meghan fell in love iwth Prince Harry. The two were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend in July, they revealed in their first joint interview with the BBC just after their engagement announcement. Though it’s not clear who exactly set them up – some reports say it was Harry’s friend Violet von Westenholz, while others claim it was fashion designer Misha Nonoo – it’s safe to say that their cupid made lucky lovers out of Meghan and Harry. Now, the couple is sure to bring a little magic into their most important job yet: parenthood!
