During the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's trip to Bristol on Friday (Feb. 1), fashion watchers noticed something strange: Duchess Meghan was holding her gloves instead of wearing them. What made the sighting all the stranger was that it was snowing! The sight had many onlookers wondering why the 37-year-old opted to carry the accessory, even when she complained of having cold hands.
According to one style expert, the decision to forgo gloves could be intentional. "Gloves signal to me a certain aesthetic. It's very ladylike to have a pair of gloves, it makes an outfit look a bit more formal," Elizabeth Holmes told Town & Country. She believes Duchess Meghan could be trying to elevate her look – even without wearing them.
There's also the idea that the former Suits star prefers to greet her fans with a firm skin-to-skin handshake. "When you can shake someone's hand and you can actually touch them, that's very intimate, and Meghan is very, very good at connecting with crowds," Holmes went on to tell the publication. "That accessibility and that intimacy is very much a part of her royal brand."
Cornelia James, glove maker to the royal family, told HELLO!: "You never see her without her hat, her handbag or her gloves. Nobody apart from the queen wears gloves all the time. They are part of her integral style and she's iconic." It could be that the soon-to-be mother is looking to the Queen for style guidance (while trying not to steal her thunder)!
Or, perhaps, she doesn't like wearing the accessory at all. On her old site The Tig, she was quoted as saying there are good and bad ways to dress for the cold weather; she considered over-doing it bad. "You just bundle up and people give you a pass when it's that cold... There's no bad weather, just bad clothing for it."
