The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been hard at work preparing for the arrival of their first royal baby this spring. And aside from their schedule including moving houses (to Frogmore Cottage!) and preparing Baby Sussex’s nursery, they’ve also found time to launch their own Instagram account on Tuesday (April 2), much to the delight of royal watchers worldwide! Here’s everything to know about their new social media channel.
They set a new world record!
In a matter of hours after they launched their official Instagram account, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex amassed 1 million followers, according to the GuinnessWorld Records. This cut the previous record, held by Korean pop star Kang Daniel, in half – he reached the same number in about 11 hours and 38 minutes, which beat Pope Francis’s record hitting 1 million followers in 12 hours. It’s safe to say Harry and Meghan’s fans were waiting with baited breath for them to join social media – after all, it’s where the duchess garnered so many of her loyal fandom before becoming a royal, on her own now-defunct Instagram account, @meghanmarkle, and her lifestyle blog, The Tig.

Their Instagram profile photo has a lot of meaning
The Sussex’s social media page features a stunning blue on white Instagram photo, and many royal watchers will be able to recognize the figure – it’s Harry and Meghan’s personalized cypher. The joint monogram is a combination of their initials ‘M’ and ‘H,’ topped with a coronet, and was first debuted to the world in July 2018 just a couple months after they exchanged vows at St George’s Chapel. It’s a symbol of the couple’s union, and how they’ll be moving forward with their royal roles.
The significance of the first nine photos shared
Social justice, youth and veterans’ empowerment, education and women’s rights are at the core of the duke and duchess’s values, and are reflected in their royal engagements and patronages. It’s no surprise their first-ever joint Instagram post was an ode to these passions! A series of nine photos followed an official slide introducing their Instagram. The pictures included images ranging from Harry’s work with the military and environmental conservation, to Meghan’s passion with helping The Hub Community Kitchen – an initiative supporting the community affected by the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire that claimed 72 lives in London’s North Kensington neighbourhood.
They already have a who’s who of celebrity followers!
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have a wide circle of friends! So naturally, when they started their account, they garnered quite the A-list roster of followers. Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Mulroney, David Beckham, Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma Roberts and many others have already followed them, along with Daniel Martin, the makeup artist for Meghan’s wedding day.
Other Royal Family members are supporting their Instagram venture
Royal watchers were over-the-moon when Princess Eugenie joined Instagram in March 2018. On top of her amazing throwback family photos and sweet snaps with husband Jack Brooksbank, Eugenie has also shared the sweetest welcomes to her family members. On Tuesday, she posted a photo from the couple’s engagement announcement at Kensington Palace’s Sunken Gardens and wrote, “Welcome cousins. @sussexroyal.”
They’re following a Canadian organization!
Aside from following the majority of their charitable endeavours – from the National Theatre to Heads Together, the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, the Mayhew, Sentebale and more – Prince Harry and Meghan have also chosen to follow one particular Canadian organization – the Royal Ontario Museum! The ROM also welcomed their newest followers (Meghan and Harry!) with a cheeky post of some their British royal collection. “Hey new followers,” they captioned the snap.
