Remember the ‘grumpy bridesmaid’ at William and Kate’s wedding? Here’s what she’s been doing since!

By Zach Harper

It was an iconic moment that was never intended to be anything of the sort, but it became burned into our collective memories that day and since. Prince William and Duchess Kate stood on the balcony of Buckingham Palace and locked lips after their 2011 wedding. The royal couple, who were surrounded by both of their families, were met with a massive roar from onlookers and well-wishers gathered outside the palace gates – but the noise was too much for one tiny guest. In response to the cheers, tiny Grace van Cutsem covered her ears and stole the world’s hearts.

Little Grace is the daughter of Rose Astor and Hugh van Cutsem . Rose is the daughter of David Waldorf Astor, a member of Britain’s aristocratic Astor family, and is a contributing editor for The Sunday Times’s travel section. Grace’s grandfather, also named Hugh van Cutsem, was a horse trainer and breeder who was one of Prince Charles’s closest friends. The two met at Cambridge during their university days and remained good pals until the elder Hugh’s death in 2013.

Grace, who was three years old at the time she was pictured in one of the world’s most infamous photobombs, is now 11, and has two younger brothers – Rafe, who turns 10 this year, and Charles, who was born in 2012. Since the royal wedding, she and her family spent have three months in Sri Lanka, she’s started school, and her yoga-loving mom has often featured her in some of her candid Instagram snaps documenting her life. Here are just a few of her most adorable moments from the past few years...

Grace’s family has other connections with the royals. Her cousin Florence was a bridesmaid at Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s wedding in 2018. Grace’s uncles William and Nicholas are also godfathers to Prince George and Prince Louis, respectively. The Van Cutsem family also used to rent Anmer Hall, William and Kate’s country home on the Sandringham estate.
