Members of the world’s royal families have been to the annual Met Gala in the past, but two key players have yet to make their debuts: Duchesses Kate and Meghan. Anna Wintour would love nothing more than to see them there!
In the lead-up to this year’s gala on May 6, the British Vogue editor in chief told NBC’s Jenna Bush Hager she’d “love to have the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge together.”
“That would be my dream couple,” the fashionista continued. “They could leave their husbands at home. It’s the two of them I want.” Perhaps Prince William and Prince Harry would feel a bit left out, but we can’t think of any better style duo to attend.
It’s unlikely the two duchesses will make their debut any time soon, but they could surely look to other royals for tips and guidance. Princess Beatrice and Charlotte Casiraghi of Monaco attended last year’s Catholic-themed event. The Princess of York dazzled in a deep purple Grecian-style gown and Charlotte – who is now expecting her second child – came dressed all in black.
In 1998, Beatrice’s mom Sarah Ferguson attended in the chicest of all-black ‘90s outfits. The year before, her close friend, the late Princess Diana, made her Met Gala debut in navy blue slip dress by John Galliano, paired with strands of pearls with a blue sapphire at the centre.
Will the duchesses one day put their style savvy to the Met Gala red carpet? Only time will tell. But it could be speculated that Meghan would look to her go-to designer, Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy, while Kate could opt for her favourite, Alexander McQueen. A royal watcher can dream!
