Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry's royal baby story is coming to the small screen with the help of the duchess's friend, Gayle King! Her upcoming documentary about royal baby Archie Harrison is set to air Friday (May 17) – and she’s opening up about the making of it.
Earlier this month, just before Archie was born, the CBS This Morning anchor – and Oprah Winfrey’s best friend! – flew to the UK to film the special. It’s called Meghan and Harry, Plus One, and it goes live Friday at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
“I learned [Meghan and Harry are] two people in love, we all knew that,” Gayle told ET about the documentary special. “But they have a baby coming in the first year and I think everybody loves a good love story.” While not many details of what viewers can expect to see have been released, important people in Meghan's life, like makeup artist Daniel Martin, can be spotted in the preview.
Since Meghan and Harry began dating, the prince has taken several steps to protect Meghan’s privacy. In 2017, Harry confirmed he and Meghan were a couple by issuing a statement asking the media and the public to respect her privacy, saying Meghan had been the target of harassment and sexism and racism from online trolls.
On Thursday, Harry was awarded damages stemming from a news agency’s publication of photos of the couple’s former Cotswolds getaway. In a statement made in court by Buckingham Palace, a royal lawyer said the photos had put the couple’s safety at risk and violated their privacy.
“Meghan’s had some knocks in the media in the UK, that’s certainly not the case [in America],” Gayle told ET. “So we’re going to hear from friends who know her well, who were at her wedding. They’re not trying to defend her, but they just want people to know that there’s a whole different side to her that people don’t know.
“But at the end of the day, these two are very united and very strong and the baby just sort of adds to all of that. And who doesn’t love a good baby story?!”
There were reports earlier this week that Meghan and Harry had invited Gayle into their home for a chat just before Meghan went into labour, but a source has since told The Daily Beast that’s not true.
Little Archie was born on May 6, and his parents debuted him to the public with a photoshoot at St. George’s Hall on the Windsor Castle grounds two days later. The name was an unusual choice, and plenty of theories have spawned about its origin and whether it’s intended to be a tribute to anyone.
“I love that name. It’s so unexpected,” Gayle told ET. “People thought Albert, Arthur, James, Philip, Charles, Spencer. But I love the fact – because Archie to me is friendly, but – it also feels very substantial, too. I think it’s great.”
Since Archie’s birth, Harry has spoken to several people at events about how his son has already changed his life. He’s told people he can’t imagine life without him, but that he deeply wishes his mother Princess Diana was still alive, and that he is missing her after Archie’s birth.
Gayle, who was one of a few people invited to Meghan’s New York baby shower in February, says the special will focus on Harry and Meghan’s first year of marriage and also reflect on their life with Archie. We can’t wait to see it!
