This Friday (May 24) marks 200 years since Queen Victoria’s birth.
The woman dubbed the “grandmother of Europe” went on to become the second-longest reigning British monarch, after the present Queen, who surpassed her in 2016.
Victoria went on to become an icon not just in the United Kingdom, but throughout the modern Commonwealth. Our democratic systems based on the Westminster Parliament were established during her reign both here in Canada and in the UK. She was the first sovereign of a confederated Canada. Here in Canada, Queen Victoria is honoured every year with a federal public holiday on the last Monday before May 25.
Many of the British royal traditions that we know today started under Victoria, and were handed down to the House of Windsor and the current generation.
She was known for her passion for her job as monarch, and was also described as a fearlessly emotional, always honest straight-talker.
But what do you know about her? We thought her 200th birthday is a great opportunity to test your knowledge with a quiz! You can take it below.
