It’s going to be a very busy weekend full of royal events, particularly at Wimbledon. Kensington Palace has just confirmed two exciting appearances!
The first will involve Duchess Meghan and Duchess Kate stepping out together on Saturday (July 13) for the women’s singles final between Serena Williams and Simona Halep. Royal watchers had been wondering if the two would make another joint appearance at the tennis championships, since they did the same thing last year when Serena was in the women’s singles final against Angelique Kerber.
It also looks like the duchesses will each be cheering for different players! Rumours began running wild about a possible appearance on Thursday after Simona told a press conference that she wanted Kate to come out to Wimbledon to support her against Serena. In a press conference, Simona was asked who she would most like to come up to cheer her on, and she replied, “Kate, I like her.” Meghan will of course be cheering on her good friend Serena.
Kate will return to Wimbledon’s Royal Box on Sunday with her husband Prince William to take in the men’s singles final between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer at Centre Court. It would certainly make William and Kate’s son Prince George happy if Roger, who is his favourite player, won his ninth Wimbledon title!
As for Meghan, she will also make an appearance on Sunday, but not at the tennis courts. The Duchess of Sussex will step out to the European premiere of The Lion King with Prince Harry at London’s Leicester Square. Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Billy Eichner, Alfre Woodard, John Kani and comedian John Oliver, who all star in the film, will also be on hand. It will be Meghan’s first red carpet event since she married Harry in May 2018.
The European premiere will be held “in support of the conservation and communities work of His Royal Highness through The Royal Foundation,” according to the Telegraph. Disney will also pledge US$1.5 million to the Lion Recovery Fund in connection with the film, the publication reports.
Conservation and a love of the environment are things that are very close to Harry’s heart, and he shares that passion with Meghan. The duke is a patron of African Parks, and there’s a good chance it will be included in his new charitable foundation with Meghan when it launches next year. So it makes sense the duchess would make her first red carpet appearance as a royal to support this important cause!
Kate and Meghan have already had quite a busy week. On Wednesday, the two were pictured with their children while they watched Harry and William compete in a charity polo match.
Photos that emerged from the day thrilled royal watchers, who got to see Meghan holding two-month-old son Archie Harrison while Kate ate lunch with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. A particularly adorable moment was had when cheeky Louis stole the show by taking Kate’s sunglasses off and putting them on his own face.
