It’s not very often you see a royal in shorts! In Duchess Kate’s case, we haven’t seen her wear a good pair of shorts in more than a decade.
Kate and Prince William took to the waves at Cowes on the Isle of Wight on Aug. 8 to compete in the inaugural King’s Cup regatta. They raced against celebrities including wildlife and survival expert Bear Grylls, who won the competition on behalf of wildlife conservation charity Tusk. Seven other charities of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s choosing were benefactors.
Royal fans were pleased and surprised to see Kate show up at the Royal Yacht Squadron in an appropriately navy blue pair of shorts, along with running shoes and an aerodynamic jacket to protect her from the wind and keep her warm.
No one freak out, but Kate Middleton wore shorts??? Yassss queeeeeennnnnn

If you’re keeping track, The Sun reports we haven’t seen Kate in shorts since 2008, when she wore a pair to the Day-Glo Midnight Roller Disco Party in London. Her outfit, complete with *yellow* shorts, was hilarious, and yes… she did roller skate during the event.
Kate had an incredible time at the regatta. She came in last place and raced on behalf of The Royal Foundation. Her standing meant she received the wooden spoon, but she was a good sport about it, laughing as William stood next to her. Speaking of William, he finished third and was competing on behalf of Child Bereavement UK.
William and Kate’s children Prince George and Princess Charlotte were watching their parents compete in a boat with their grandparents Carole and Michael Middleton. They looked totally adorable, with George wearing a Breton shirt and captain hat, and Charlotte also in nautical stripes. Cheeky Charlotte also stole the show after the race, when she stuck her tongue out at a crowd of onlookers!
