Princess Diana’s life has been dramatized plenty of times, from 2013’s Diana (starring Naomi Watts as the People’s Princess) to the upcoming fourth season of Netflix’s The Crown. And now, Diana is the subject of a new musical set to open on Broadway next March!
Diana premiered earlier this year at San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse. It features Jeanna de Wall as the late Princess of Wales, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles and Tony Award-winner Judy Kaye as the Queen.
“She made everyone feel special, from the highest person to the lowest ranking person, and I think we want to celebrate her,” Jeanna said of her role, according to BBC News.
The production features Diana preparing for her 1981 wedding to Charles and also explores her life after that fairytale ceremony at Westminster Abbey. It was written by Joe DiPietro and Bon Jovikeyboardist David Bryan , both Tony Award winners.
“I was reading a book about her and I thought, ‘This is an amazing story about an amazing woman,’” Joe told LondonTheatre.co.uk. “She has this aspirational aspect to her where she really wanted to do good. I thought it was a great idea for a musical. I asked around to see if anyone was doing it – no one was – so David and I just jumped into it.”
Previews for Diana begin March 2, 2020 and it will have its opening night at New York’s Longacre Theatre on March 31.
