Princess Charlotte had a huge day on Sept. 5, when she arrived at Thomas’s Battersea for her first day of school! The four-year-old was accompanied by big brother Prince George and mom and dad Duchess Kate and Prince William as she started the next step on her educational journey. To celebrate, Kensington Palace has just released an adorable photo of Charlotte and her brother before they set off for school!
The picture shows the little princess and her brother, who turned six in July, posing at their home at Kensington Palace in London. The incredibly heartwarming photo shows a grinning Charlotte looking excited as she stares confidently at the camera, her arm around her sibling. Meanwhile, George (who lost several teeth this summer!) smiles at the camera and holds his sister’s back like the supportive big brother we’ve seen him be over the years.
Charlotte couldn’t hide her happiness as she and her family arrived at the school, where George has been a student since 2017. The little princess was decked out in the school’s uniform, wearing a skirt, red and blue cardigan and blouse underneath and dress shoes as she held her mom’s hand.
She appeared to have a brief moment of shyness, hiding behind her mom’s skirt and playing with her hair as they were greeted by Helen Haslam, the head of the lower school, but her mom coached her through it and she confidently shook Helen’s hand, smiling at her as they said hello before heading inside.
Kate had a huge smile on her face as her little girl was introduced to Helen and looked incredibly proud of her two children, as did William. The duchess was not able to drop George off for his first day at Thomas’s Battersea in 2017 because she was suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness, while she was pregnant with Prince Louis.
Back then, George looked a bit shy as he arrived at school, too, but he has been fitting in well ever since and has acquired the nickname “PG,” which is short for… you guessed it! Prince George. The future King starts Year 2 this year.
“He’s very popular and has lots of friends, and there’s very little fuss about who he is,” a parent at the school told Vanity Fair earlier this year.
Sounds like Charlotte will have quite the supportive brother in George in her first year! In her Reception year, she’ll be taught French, computing, art, music, drama and ballet, and will also join her classmates on a “woodland adventure” that includes building a den, hunting for bugs and making crafts. She’ll no doubt be thrilled to take part and has got good practice in this year, since Kate’s Back to Nature Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show featured a den as part of its homage to the great outdoors!
