Meghan arrived at the event wearing a shirt designed by her friend Misha Nonoo, pants by Jigsaw (both part of The Smart Set collection), a tan Ralph Lauren belt and Jimmy Choo shoes. Meghan was also wearing a gold cuff bracelet once owned by Princess Diana, along with Diana's butterfly earrings. Meghan wore both pieces of jewellery while on tour in Australia, New Zealand, Tonga and Fiji last year.

Every time someone buys one of the items from the collection, a second item is donated to Smart Works to help unemployed women find work.

Prior to heading in to the event, Meghan told a crowd that had assembled outside John Lewis's headquarters, "Thank you so much for being here today. It's very exciting and it looks beautiful and I'm sorry if you were waiting for a bit in this sunshine, though it's pretty nice weather."

The duchess also made a speech at the event, in which she talked about the importance of women helping each other.
“I think it is really key in this day and age that we remember it’s not just about the people you know you’re supporting, it’s about the people you don’t know – that you may never know, may never meet,” she said. “As women, it is 100 per cent our responsibility, I think, to support and uplift each other. To champion each other so we aim to succeed, to not set each other up for failure, but instead to really be there rallying ‘round each other and say, ‘I want to help you.’
“And you may not ever meet that person, but you know when you put on that blazer or that shirt or you carry that tote or put on those trousers and that dress, that some other woman on the other side of the country is wearing that piece because you made that purchase.”

The capsule collection has its own branding, and Meghan looked so thrilled to have been part of the initiative when she left the event.

Just before the event, Meghan took to Instagram to share some photos from the shoot done for the Smart Set a few weeks ago.
“Since moving to the UK, it has been deeply important to me to meet with communities and organizations on the ground doing meaningful work and to try and do whatever I can to help them amplify their impact,” she wrote in the post. “We’ve demonstrated how we can work collectively to empower each other – another layer to this communal success story, that I am so proud to be a part of.”
